With profound sadness we announce the passing of Victor Carl Sakalauskas, age 76, on Sunday, February 22, 2026.
Born in Sydney Mines on March 7, 1949, he was the son of the late George and Pearl (Rogers) Smith. Victor began his career as a medic in the military and continued in the Prince Mines for 16 years. He began a hobby of writing fiction and poetry and became a published author. He loved the outdoors - snow shoeing and cross-country skiing in winter and kayaking in summer. After a move to New Minas, he began cycling which became a passion. Victor also had a love of gardening, reading and making stained glass.
He is survived by his wife Charmaine (Young), his children Kim (Chris Gregan), New Minas, Tanya (James Penney), North Sydney, his step-son Terry Lizotte (Holly), Airdrie, Alberta; his granddaughters Addyson, Ava and Jasmin. He is also survived by brothers Jack (Betty), Peter (Patsy), Tony (Sue); sisters-in-law Judy Sakalauskas, North Sydney, Bev Currie and Bernice Masters, both in Dartmouth, Sharon Forrestall, Mulgrave; brother-in-law Grant Young, Peterborough and much-loved nieces and nephews.
Beside his parents, Victor was predeceased by his brother Simon, sister-in-law Marlene MacLean, brother-in-law Greg Young and a sister in infancy.
Special thanks to the staff at CCU, AnCala Palliative Care and Dr. Bilal Hussain at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, also the Sobeys Pharmacy in North Sydney.
A graveside service for Victor will be held at a later date under the care and direction of W.J. Dooley Funeral Home, 107 Pleasant Street, North Sydney. In lieu of flowers memory donations may be made to the Heart & Stroke Foundation.
