Greg Tanner
North Sydney
It is with profound sorrow that we announce the passing of Gregory Joseph Tanner, 69, of North Sydney on Saturday, April 13, 2024 while surrounded by close family. He was born in North Sydney on September 6, 1954. Dad remained stoic in his battle with cancer over the last year, with his wife Shirley by his side the entire time. I will miss Dad's presence every day and will carry his love, laughter, and lessons in my heart forever.
Dad was a coal miner at the Prince Mine and was a rigger for Partners Crane Rentals where many lifelong friendships began. He met Shirley at Marine Atlantic and they have been two little lovebirds ever since. Anyone around them could see the true love and adoration that they felt for each other. He loved spending time with Shirley and the Day family, watching her create incredible paintings, and going for their drives. "Grampie" lived in his barn, teaching his grandson Jeremy many things, while making a "big scoff". Dad enjoyed the outdoors, especially fishing with Gerard.
He is survived by his loving wife Shirley Tanner (Day), his daughter Barbara Tanner with grandson Jeremy, and his son Vincent Tanner (Sarah) with grandsons Clifford & Malcolm. He is also survived by his sister Barbara Sayers (James), his brother Raymond Tanner (Teresa), nieces and nephews, the Day family, his close friends and neighbors.
Besides his parents Ellsworth and Irene (Tobin) Tanner, he was predeceased by his brothers John and Stephen.
We would like to give our sincere thanks to Dr. D'Intino and all the amazing staff at Hospice Cape Breton. Thank you also to the palliative care doctors and nurses.
There will be no visitation by request. A private memorial gathering for the family will be held at a later date in the W.J. Dooley Funeral Home, 107 Pleasant Street, North Sydney. Memorial donations may be made to the Hospice Cape Breton in his name. Online condolences may be sent to the family by leaving a message on the tribute wall of the obituary at www.wjdooley.com.
