Ellen "Nellie" Agatha (Jessome) Penney

It is with heavy hearts that we, the family, announce the passing of Ellen Agatha Penney, age 86, of North Sydney, on January 20, 2026, in the comfort of her home, with her family.  Born in Mill Creek on February 25, 1938, Nellie was the daughter of the late William and Mary Anne (Marsh) Jessome.

Nellie is survived by her daughter Sandra Penney, son Steven (Janice) Penney, siblings Isabelle Taylor and Earl (Gertie) Jessome; grandchildren James, Sarah (Jared), Stephanie and Matthew. She is also survived by four great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. Nellie is also survived by her god daughter Caroline Cox.

Besides her parents, Nellie was predeceased by her husband Ambrose “Bud” Penney, sisters Bridget Cox, Marguerite Jamieson, Mary O’Hanlon, Anna Leblanc and Madonna Annesty, brothers Reginald “Reg”, Ignatius “Naish”, Dennis “Dinny”, Thomas, William “Willie” Russell, John A. and Robert Emmett Jessome.

Nellie enjoyed much of her time with her late husband Bud and her family. Bud and Nellie were often seen skating arm and arm, enjoying each other’s company for many years. She was very personable and friendly to all she would meet. Nellie was an avid sewer. She had a kind heart and would help others in need. Nellie had many friends, but one of her closest was the late Greta MacIssac. Special thank you to the Victorian Order of Nurses (VON) and Palliative Care.

There will be no visitation. Burial will take place at a later date, when Nellie and Bud will be interred at Holy Cross Cemetery, North Sydney. Arrangements are under the care and direction of W.J.
