Earl Boutilier Obituary

It is with heavy hearts we announce the peaceful passing of our father, grandfather, brother and friend, Earl Boutilier, on February 4, 2026, at Northside General Hospital.

Earl passed away after a life defined by quiet strength, perseverance, and unwavering kindness. From the age of twelve, Earl lived with a neuromuscular disease, later facing additional challenges including diabetes and macular degeneration. However, these hardships NEVER defined him. Instead, he chose determination over despair, grace over complaint and compassion over self-pity, becoming a beacon of resilience and goodness. He embodied the Golden Rule—treat others the way you want to be treated—and raised the bar for what it truly means to be a good person. To his family, and especially to his son, he was a hero in the truest sense: someone to admire, learn from, and strive to emulate. He showed by example that true strength is not measured by physical ability, but by character, integrity, and how one treats others. He will be deeply missed and forever remembered.

Born in North Sydney, he was the son of Basil Boutilier Sr. and Ivy (Bond) Boutilier. Earl worked for over 25 years with Atlantic Tractors/CAT. One of his most meaningful contributions to the community was being a member of the North Sydney Rotary Club. He lived his entire life aligned with their motto, “Service Above Self,” always willing to help others and dedicating his time to community groups and initiatives. He was also an active member and elder of St. Matthew Wesley United Church.

Earl is survived by his only son Graham, daughter-in-law Gina, cherished granddaughters Claire and Ella, sister Alice Pearcey (David), closest friend and honorary family member Tracy Campbell and brother-in-law Steve Spencer (Barb).

Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his beloved wife Pat, brother Basil Jr. and sister-in law Maryann.

The family would like to thank the staff of 4 West at the Northside General Hospital and Dr. Paul Hickey for his years of care and kindness.

Visitation for Earl will be 7-9 pm, Sunday, February 8, in the W.J. Dooley Funeral Home, 107 Pleasant St., North Sydney. A funeral service will take place at 2 pm, Monday, February 9, also in the W.J. Dooley Funeral Home with Rev. Steven Mills officiating. The service will be live-streamed on the W.J. Dooley Funeral Home Facebook page. Burial will take place at a later date in Lakeside Cemetery, North Sydney. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Northside Hospital Foundation or a charity of your choosing. Online condolences can be left for the family on the tribute wall of the obituary.
