It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Cecil Gordon Hickey – loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, uncle, and dear friend – on Saturday, March 30, 2024, at the age of 81. Born on June 16, 1942 in North Sydney, he was the beloved son of the late Pius and Emma (Hawley) Hickey.
Cecil dedicated over 37 years of his life to serving his community as a firefighter with unwavering commitment at the North Sydney Fire Department. In addition, he worked as an ambulance and taxi driver with Blue and White and Staggs Taxi. He found solace and joy in the timeless melodies of old country music, particularly those of Elvis Presley. However, above all else, his greatest source of happiness was his family, whom he cherished dearly.
Left to mourn Cecil’s passing is his wife of 58 years, Catherine, alongside his children – Kevin (Kelly) and Tracy (Duan) Landry. He will also be lovingly remembered by his grandchildren - Christa (Shane) Ethier, Tyler (Sarah) Jenkins, Ryan (Raylene) Landry and Devin Landry as well as his adored great-grandchildren, affectionately known as “Gramps Girls” - Juliana and Scarlet Ethier. Cecil leaves behind a legacy of love and warmth that will forever be treasured.
He is further survived by his siblings – Pearl Allain, Viola (Melvin) Crewe, Betty (Carl) Roberts, Joan (Gordon) Ferneyhough, Gladys (Lee) Fraser; brother-in-law Bill Hawkins; sisters-in-law Alice Hickey, Beverly Hickey, and Brenda Hickey. Cecil will also be deeply missed by numerous nieces, nephews, and extended family members.
In addition to his parents, Cecil was predeceased by his daughter, Karen Ann, and siblings – James “Buck,” Mary "Sis" (Bob) Faulkner, Ann Hawkins, Joseph (Joyce), Robert “Bobby,” Pius “Ike,” Gordon, Charlotte “Dot” (Dan), as well as an infant brother, Pius, and his brother-in-law, Ulysse Allain.
A funeral mass to honour Cecil's life will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, April 2, 2024, at St. Joseph Church in North Sydney with Rev. Doug MacDonald officiating. Following the mass, a reception will be held at the North Sydney Firefighters Club located at 14 Pierce Street, offering an opportunity for friends and family to gather and share cherished memories. In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Cecil may be made to Diabetes Canada. Expressions of sympathy and condolences may be shared with the family through the tribute wall on the obituary page at www.wjdooley.com.
In honouring Cecil's memory, let us remember the love and kindness he brought into the lives of all who had the privilege of knowing him, leaving an indelible mark on our hearts and souls.
